The Inland Seas Education Association is thrilled to announce that its 77-foot schooner, Inland Seas, will be coming to Escanaba to offer its popular Great Lakes Discovery Sails to the public in Escanaba. This unique three-hour maritime adventure offers local residents and visitors a rare opportunity to step into the shoes of a Great Lakes scientist and a traditional tall-ship sailor.
Designed for families, students, and anyone eager to experience the water in a whole new way, the Great Lakes Discovery Sail is a fully immersive, hands-on experience. Participants will actively engage with the local aquatic ecosystem while learning the mechanics of traditional sailing. Public sails in Escanaba are scheduled for July 25 at 1:15 p.m. in Escanaba.
During the three-hour excursion, passengers will:
Become Citizen Scientists: Use professional, real-world scientific equipment to sample and analyze the health of the Great Lakes. Participants will collect and examine fish, plankton, and benthic organisms living on the lake floor.
Master the Sails: Work alongside the experienced crew to help raise the sails of the two-masted schooner.
Steer the Ship: Take a turn at the helm and feel what it is like to guide a 77-foot ship through the water.
Learn Stewardship: Discover the critical importance of protecting and preserving freshwater resources through engaging, expert-led commentary.
“Our mission is to inspire long-term stewardship for the Great Lakes through hands-on education,” said Fred Sitkins, Executive Director of the Inland Seas Education Association. “We are incredibly excited to bring the schooner Inland Seas to Escanaba and provide the community with an unforgettable connection to Little Bay de Noc and the waters which serve as a sanctuary for northern Lake Michigan.”
Event & Ticket Information: Space is limited for these exclusive public sails, and advanced registration is highly recommended. To ensure a prompt departure and maximize time on the water, passengers are asked to arrive early, as the ship cannot be held for late arrivals.
