The Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter (UPAWS) is thrilled to announce that, following its temporary closure and recovery efforts related to a canine parvovirus outbreak, the shelter is now fully open to the public and has reinstated walk-in adoptions for dogs, cats, and small animals.
Beginning on Tuesday, June 23, visitors may stop in during regular public hours to meet adoptable animals—no appointment is needed.
UPAWS is open Tuesday through Sunday from Noon to 4:00 p.m.
While walk-in adoptions have returned for most animals, UPAWS’ current group of puppies will continue to follow a separate process. Due to their age and special placement requirements, interested adopters should first complete an Adoption Interest Form. A member of the adoption team will then contact applicants to discuss the puppies, answer questions, and explain the next steps.
“We’re thrilled to welcome everyone back,” said Ann Brownell, Community Outreach & Volunteer Coordinator at UPAWS. “Reinstating walk-in adoptions returns us to the process that served our community well for many years while continuing to ensure thoughtful matches between pets and adopters. We can’t wait to help more families find their new best friend.”
