A rematch for the Upper Peninsula’s seat in Congress is set for November after Tuesday night’s primary election results. Republican incumbent Jack Bergman will face the woman he defeated two years ago, Democrat Callie Barr.
In Tuesday’s GOP primary, as of 1;00 a.m., Bergman had roughly 74-percent of the vote, compared to 13-percent each for Justin Michal and Matt DenOtter.
“I’m incredibly grateful to the Bergman Brigade and the thousands of voters across Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula who once again placed their trust in me. This victory belongs to every volunteer who knocked doors, made phone calls, put up signs, and stood with our campaign despite millions of dollars in false attacks,” Bergman (R-Watersmeet) posted on Facebook.
In the Democratic primary, as of 1:00 a.m., Barr, who hails from Traverse City, had 59-percent of the vote, with Kyle Blomquist at 36-percent and Wayne Stiles at six-percent.
“This campaign has always been about us. It’s about every volunteer that believes that our families here in Upper and Northern Michigan deserve better,” Barr posted on Facebook Tuesday. “Together, we have built a campaign rooted in the belief that government should work for all of us. We’re fighting to stop corruption in D.C., lower everyday costs, protect Social Security, achieve universal healthcare, make housing affordable, stand up for our veterans, and preserve our Great Lakes for generations to come.”
The 79-year-old Bergman has represented the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Michigan since 2017. Before that, Dan Benishek held the seat from 2011-2017.
