Marinette is covering its Flock cameras, at least for the time being.
Marinette Mayor Steve Genisot says they’ve been the subject of some controversy, and while the conversation continues in the community, they are putting bags over the cameras.
Neighboring Menominee decided last month not to purchase or use these cameras.
Use of the devices that can record your license plate information is drawing fire nationwide. Police say the cameras can help to solve crimes like stolen vehicles and kidnappings.
But in other places, it’s alleged that police used the information provided by the cameras for illegal activities, like tracking ex-wives or girlfriends.
Below is the joint statement issued by the Marinette Police Chief and Marinette Mayor.
