Northern Michigan University is inviting students, faculty, staff and community members to participate in several events commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
The observances will begin at 8:46 a.m. on Sept. 11, when NMU’s carillon tower bells ring in recognition of the moment the first hijacked plane struck the World Trade Center’s North Tower. A moment of silence will follow.
The university will also pay tribute to Lt. Col. Kip Taylor, an NMU graduate and ROTC alumnus who was among those killed when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001.
Community members are invited to gather at 9:30 a.m. at Veteran Rock on the Northern Center lawn, where Northern’s Department of Military Science and ROTC program will present the colors and a memorial flag in Taylor’s honor.
Major Jeffrey Woleben is scheduled to speak during the ceremony.
Taylor graduated from NMU in 1985. A plaque honoring his memory was dedicated at Veteran Rock in 2009.
As part of the university’s Homecoming activities, NMU will also present three performances of “Find a TV,” an original theater production that recounts the reaction on campus and throughout the Upper Peninsula on the day of the attacks.
Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sept. 17-19 in Jamrich Hall Room 1100. The shows are free and open to the public, though attendees are encouraged to reserve tickets online.
