Michigan Adds 3,400 Positive Test Results; 54 In Upper Peninsula

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Tuesday reported 3,414 new positive test results and 88 new deaths.

State officials went through death certificates and matched them to previous positive test results. They added 105 more deaths to the statewide total.

At a news conference Tuesday, the state’s chief medical executive, Doctor Joneigh Kalduhn, says the numbers are going in the right direction. She said that case counts, positivity rates, hospitalizations, and deaths are all declining.

“But what we’re seeing in the data is no reason to celebrate,” she said, noting that the numbers are still three-to-four times higher than at the start of September.

Michigan now has 483,922 confirmed cases and 12,282 deaths since the crisis began in March.

The state also has 39,917 “probable cases” and 684 “probable deaths” that are not confirmed by a positive test result, but COVID-19 is believed to be the cause.

The Upper Peninsula added 54 new positive tests, with 18 of them coming in Menominee County. The U.P. added deaths in Delta, Chippewa, and Houghton Counties. The U.P. now has 14,171 confirmed positive test results, and 324 confirmed COVID-19 deaths since the crisis began in March.

The U.P. has had a total of 3,249 probable cases and 73 probable deaths.

Some local health departments may report different numbers on different days. We use the MDHHS numbers in our report for consistency.

MDHHS on Saturday more than 33,000 people have been listed as “recovered” in the last week alone. The total recoveries now stands at 318,319. This is defined as being alive 30 days after the positive test or diagnosis. This is updated once a week, on Saturdays.
