Republican First District Congressman Jack Bergman cruised to a victory Tuesday in the Upper Peninsula and northern lower peninsula congressional race, bucking a trend that saw Democrats crush the GOP in most of the country, even in “red states”.
Bergman, a retired Marine lieutenant general, has been in office since January, 2017. This will be his fifth term in Washington.
With 77% of the precincts reporting as of 6 a.m. Wednesday, Bergman was leading Democrat Callie Barr, 54.1% to 43.9% (162,000 votes to 132,000). The Associated Press and all of the national news networks called the race for Bergman before 11 p.m.
Bergman, who will turn 80 years old in February, campaigned on the work he has done on veterans issues over the past decade. He has also been outspoken about the need to clamp down on illegal immigration, and has said that law enforcement needs more support.
His opponent, Barr, criticized Bergman for not holding a town hall meeting in the U.P since 2017. But Bergman beat her for the second time, after also beating her in 2024.
Bergman’s win was a rare bright spot for the GOP in Tuesday’s election, as Democrats have flipped at least 26 seats as of 6 am Wednesday, putting Republicans in the minority.
