The fourth time was not the charm for the Gwinn Area Community Schools as the district tried once again to convince the community to approve a tax increase to make repairs to its buildings, as well as consolidating fourth and fifth graders into the middle/high school building.
This time, it was a $24.95 million proposal, or a 1.89 mill increase over 30 years. It failed again, this time by just 14 votes.
But in Ishpeming, voters approved a tax increase to keep the Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library operating. The Library Director had warned that a “no” vote would have led to drastic cuts at the library, and could have even led to its closure down the road.
Ishpeming also elected a new mayor, with Brad Argall defeating Jason Chapman by a 2-to-1 margin (1,635-846). Argall spoke with RRN News early Wednesday about the library vote.
“I’m very excited with the support that the library has received through this entire campaign,” Argall said. “The library is an integral part of our community. We look to support that through the upcoming uears, and find additional ways to support it so the entire burden doesn’t have to go on Ishpeming taxpayers. So, we’ll be looking at that going forward.”
There was a contested race for the 96th district court judgeship in Marquette County, and local attorney Derek Swajanen won the spot on the bench with 14,936 votes. Patrick Crowley was second with 13,751 votes.
There were also contested Marquette City Commission and Ishpeming City Council races, and Negaunee’s mayor position went to Jon Becker, who defeated Amanda Ghanavati, 1,055-818.
