The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday announced 1,872 new coronavirus cases and 13 new deaths.
State officials also went through death certificates and matched them to previous positive test results. They added 67 more deaths to the total.
Michigan now has a total of 556,109 cases and 14,491 deaths since the crisis began last March.
The state also has 50,379 “probable cases” and 911 “probable deaths” that are not confirmed by a positive test result, but COVID-19 is believed to be the cause.
The Upper Peninsula added 51 cases Thursday, with most of them in the western U-P. Ten new cases were reported in Gogebic County and eight in Houghton County. Nine new cases were added in Marquette County.
The U.P. now has 15,863 confirmed positive test results, and 365 confirmed COVID-19 deaths since the crisis began in March.
The U.P. has had a total of 3,782 probable cases and 81 probable deaths.
Some local health departments may report different numbers on different days. We use the MDHHS numbers in our report for consistency.
The state also is reporting that more than 21,000 people have recovered in the past week alone. That is defined as being alive at least 30 days after the diagnosis or onset of symptoms. Michigan now has 463,106 total recovered cases. This number is updated once a week, on Saturdays.
