Michigan Adds 2,000 New Cases; 27 In Upper Peninsula

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced 2,048 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday and 21 new deaths.

State officials went through death certificates and matched them to previous positive test results. They added six more deaths to the state’s total.

Michigan now has a total of 612,618 cases and 15,810 deaths since the crisis began one year ago.

The state also has 63,866 “probable cases” and 995 “probable deaths” that are not confirmed by a positive test result, but COVID-19 is believed to be the cause.

The Upper Peninsula added 27 new cases on Tuesday, with seven of them in Marquette County and five in Chippewa County. There were also two new deaths reported in Chippewa County and one new death in Menominee County.

The U.P. now has 16,659 confirmed positive test results, and 392 confirmed COVID-19 deaths since the crisis began in March of 2020.

The U.P. has had a total of 4,181 probable cases and 94 probable deaths.

Some local health departments may report different numbers on different days. We use the MDHHS numbers in our report for consistency.

The state also is reporting that more than 7,000 people have recovered in the past week. That is defined as being alive at least 30 days after the diagnosis or onset of symptoms. Michigan now has 556,697 total recovered cases. This number is updated once a week, on Saturdays.
