Coronavirus Cases Continue To Surge; 105 New Cases In U.P. Tuesday

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Tuesday reported 5,177 new positive tests and 28 new deaths.

State officials also looked through death certificates and matched them to previous positive test results. They added 20 more deaths to the total.

Here in the Upper Peninsula, there were 110 new positive test results reported on Tuesday. That includes 26 new cases in Marquette County, 20 in Delta County, and 19 in Chippew County. Houghton County had 12 more cases and Dickinson County added nine.

There was one new death reported in Houghton County.

The U.P. now has 17,176 confirmed positive test results, and 398 confirmed COVID-19 deaths, since the crisis began in March of 2020.

The U.P. has had a total of 4,486 probable cases and 95 probable deaths.

Some local health departments may report different numbers on different days. We use the MDHHS numbers in our report for consistency.

Michigan now has a total of 665,948 positive tests since the crisis began in March of 2020, and 16,082 deaths.

The state also has 73,296 “probable cases” and 1,026 “probable deaths” that are not confirmed by a positive test result, but COVID-19 is believed to be the cause.

The state also is reporting that 569,480 people have recovered from the virus. That is defined as being alive at least 30 days after the diagnosis or onset of symptoms. Recoveries are up by some 7,000 people in the past week.
