In 2019 the CTC Youth Survey was administered to all students in Marinette and Menominee Counties in grades 6,8,10, and 12. Results of the information collected was shared with the CTC data work group. Members of this work group participated in a data analysis training, which included comparison data from the 2017 survey. The following are highlights released from the CTC data work group after studying the results.
Binge Drinking (more than three drinks on occasion for a female, and five drinks for male) – When asked questions in relation to if youth had participated in binge drinking within the last 2 weeks:
6th grade – 2.4% had binged, a 71% increase from 2017
8th grade – 8.2% had binged, a 67% increase from 2017
10th grade – 13.8% had binged, a 38% increase from 2017
12th grade shared 23.8% of youth had binged within the last 2 weeks, no 12th grade comparison.
30 Day Use of Alcohol – When asked if students reported using alcohol in the last 30 days:
6th grade – 5.3% had consumed alcohol, an 82% increase from 2017
8th grade – 19.8% had consumed alcohol, a 78% increase from 2017
10th grade – 26.3% had consumed alcohol, a 25% increase from 2017
12th grade shared 43.5% of youth had consumed alcohol within the last 30 days.
The data collected from the survey results drives the CTC group to select what problem behaviors and risk factors are a priority to address within the community. From there, an action plan is created to prevent youth problem behaviors and promote positive youth development. Just as eating a high-fat diet is a risk factor for heart disease and getting regular exercise is a protective factor for heart disease and other health problems, there are ways the community, school, family, peer groups, and individual youth that can help protect youth from, or put them at risk for, drug use and other problem behaviors.
Engaging in underage and binge drinking are risk factors towards developing an addiction later in life, while abstaining from alcohol consumption under the age of 21 and feeling connected to the community and trusted adults in life, are protective factors for our youth.
