Representative Jack Bergman spoke on the House floor Friday calling for the federal government to get out of the way of economic recovery and instead, encourage Americans to get back to work.
While expanded unemployment benefits were important at the start of the pandemic as states shut down businesses nationwide, today the needs have changed. This problem has become even more apparent as the unemployment rate increased to 6.1% in the month of April.
Rep. Bergman also joined with fellow Michigan Representatives in sending a letter to Governor Whitmer calling for Michigan to end its participation in the federal supplemental unemployment insurance benefits program. This step would support thousands of businesses across the state, improve Michigan’s economy, and accelerate our recovery from the pandemic.
