U.P. Adds Three COVID Deaths; Total Cases Cross 20,000 Mark

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday reported 510 new coronavirus positive tests.

The state also announced the number of deaths dropped by five people after data was checked. But they also looked through death certificates and matched them to previous positive test results. They added 62 deaths to the total, for a net increase of 57 deaths.

Michigan now has a total of 889,511 positive tests since the crisis began in March of 2020, and 19,266 deaths.

Here in the Upper Peninsula, there were nine new cases added across the 15-county region. Keweenaw County also had two cases removed from its total.

The new cases put the U.P. over the 20,000 mark for confirmed cases during the pandemic.

The U.P. added three deaths on Thursday: one each in Alger, Marquette, and Luce Counties.

The U.P. now has 20,006 confirmed positive test results, and 435 confirmed COVID-19 deaths, since the crisis began in March of 2020.

The U.P. has had a total of 5,659 probable cases and 95 probable deaths.

Some local health departments may report different numbers on different days. We use the MDHHS numbers in our report for consistency.

The state also has 104,441 “probable cases” and 1,219 “probable deaths” that are not confirmed by a positive test result, but COVID-19 is believed to be the cause.

The state also is reporting that 818,165 people have recovered from the virus.  That is defined as being alive at least 30 days after the diagnosis or onset of symptoms. That is an increase of 26,000 recoveries in the past week.
