It’s all clear in downtown Marquette now after officials closed down the 200 block and evacuated local businesses near the courthouse and post office on Washington and 3rd Street.
A federal marshal noted a “suspicious object” while conducting a perimeter sweep of the building. The object was determined to be a mounted document carrier. Officials, however, were unsure of its contents. Out of an abundance of caution, they evacuated the area and investigated with a K-9 unit.
The area opened back up to normal shortly after it was confirmed that the object was not a threat.
MARQUETTE POLICE PRESS RELEASE:
On 06-15-2021, at approximately 0955 hrs, a suspicious object was located in the 200 block of West Washington Street.
As a safety precautionary measure, a perimeter in the downtown area was secured and traffic was rerouted. Businesses in the immediate area were asked to evacuate as well until the area was deemed safe. The object was later determined to not be a threat and all traffic and businesses resumed to normal. Thank you to those assisting on scene, including Northern Michigan University Police Department, Michigan State Police, Marquette City Fire Department, and the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department.
