The governor announced last Friday that she’d like to use federal stimulus money to upgrade women’s facilities at Michigan Army National Guard armories.
What would that mean for the Upper Peninsula’s six armories?
According to Penny Carroll, the Public Affairs Chief with the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, it would infuse a total of 17-point-3 million dollars in improvements across the U-P.
If the state legislature signs on, the Ishpeming Armory would get 3-point-5 million dollars, the armories in Calumet and Sault Ste. Marie 3-million each, the Kingsford armory would get 2-point-8 million, while the Gladstone and Marquette Armories would each get 2-point-5 million dollars in improvements.
Of the 17-point-3 million total, half would come from state funds, and the other half federal funds.
Carroll says this would not only make needed improvements at the armories, but would also infuse money into U-P communities and provide local construction jobs.
