The City of Ishpeming will clear-cut about twelve acres of wooded lands in order to build a new rustic campground along Malton Road.
The work is scheduled to start on Thursday.
The city received a $100,000 state grant to build the 16-acre campground, and they’ve applied for more grants on the local level.
The city hired Holli Forest Products to cut out dead and dying jack pine trees, with the goal of keeping “more desirable, healthy trees” in that area. Another contractor, Sam’s Dirt Works has been hired to come in and remove all of the stumps that are left behind. The clear-cutting will be done before winter sets in, and then they will take bids on the actual campground construction, which is scheduled for next spring or early summer.
