Rep. Beau LaFave today applauded the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) for dropping its recommendation for wearing masks in schools and other indoor settings. However, according to LaFave, this should have happened long ago.
“While I am happy to learn about the MDHHS and its recent decision that masks are no longer necessary in schools or other indoor settings, this should have happened much sooner than after ‘700 days to slow the spread’,” said LaFave, of Iron Mountain.
High-risk individuals should continue wearing a mask, despite the recent order, according to the MDHHS. After stating that we are in a “recovery” phase, MDHHS outlined two other phases in which to categorize the pandemic and intensity of virus spread: Response, and Readiness. MDHHS also said school districts and organizations should work with their local health departments to determine any COVID-related policies.
LaFave said: “At least since the Delta-variant, masks do next to nothing for children if they aren’t N-95, changed every hour, and properly fitted. If you miss one of those, the mask can be rendered useless. Suicides are up in Michigan due to the pandemic. Learning, unfortunately, is down due to the lack of in-person learning. Meanwhile, we have hypocritical politicians ignoring their own edict by not wearing masks at sporting events such as the Super Bowl, and more egregiously, posing mask-less for pictures at schools surrounded by children forced to wear masks.”
“The state should never have had a mask mandate in the first place,” said LaFave. “It is an insulting notion that bureaucrats care more about kids’ wellbeing than their parents. All Michigan schools should immediately do the right thing and allow parents to decide what is best for their own children.”
