Evan Owen John, 30, of Green Bay Wisconsin, was sentenced to 12 months in the Delta County Jail following the entry of a guilty plea to two counts of Police Officer – Assaulting/Resisting/Obstructing, punishable by up to 2 years in prison.
On September 23, 2021, Michigan State Trooper observed vehicle with a defective exhaust. The Trooper conducted a traffic stop and spoke with the male driver. John was identified in the rear seat of the vehicle. There were 3 other passengers in the vehicle.
A K9 sniff search was conducted on the vehicle and the K9 indicated for the presence of narcotics. When confronted with the information that the K9 hit on the vehicle, the male driver of the vehicle indicated that it was most likely John that had any narcotics. The Trooper, along with other officers, made contact with John and observed that he appeared under the influence.
John was observed to be a tinfoil item in his mouth. Officers ordered John to spit out the item, but John refused. A struggle between the officers and John occurred when John tensed up and refused multiple orders. Officers were able to get John under control. John later admitted that he had tinfoil in his mouth, but nothing more. A search of the vehicle located syringes and other drug paraphernalia.
Michigan State Police was assisted in its investigation by Delta County Sheriff’s Office, K9 Sage, and Hannahville Tribal Police.
