With the bay between Baraga and L’Anse now safe enough for the Village of Baraga to place the drum, it’s time to guess when the ice will melt. This marks the fourth year the Baraga County Chamber of Commerce is holding an Ice Melt Contest on the Keweenaw Bay.
The drum was placed on the ice on February 17. You can view it from the comfort of your automobile as you are driving on US-41 near the Baraga State Park.
Participants try their luck (or skill) by guessing the exact time the drum will break through the ice on the bay. The participant who has the closest guess, down to the minute, will win 50% of net ticket proceeds. Updates on ice conditions are provided by Indian Country Sports and reported on the Chamber website, keweenawbay.org, along with results and terms of the Keweenaw Bay Ice Melt.
Taking a look back in time, the barrel went down on March 30, 2020, March 22, 2021, and April 24, 2022.
Judy Bozicevich, who heads up promotions for the Ice Melt, is looking forward to a promising amount of participation in this year’s contest, which means a large prize to the winner. Boziecevich says, “Ice conditions have been uncertain this year. We were hopeful the ice would cooperate, and now that it has, let the guessing begin!”
Ticket sales will end on March 20, 2023. Tickets can be purchased at Indian Country Sports, Hardwood Steakhouse, Skippers Bar & Grill, Northern Oil, L’Anse American Legion Post 144, Bella Vista, Woodland Firearms, Wilkinson’s General Store, and the Chamber office, or enter online through the Chamber website.
