Bay College is excited to announce that Jaylen Flaniken has been selected to deliver the College’s 2023 graduation commencement speech on May 6th.
Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Flaniken is thefourth oldest out of nine children. People usually refer to him as “Jaybat,” a nickname in honor of his favorite superhero, Batman. He loves playing basketball and has been playing since he was nine years old. Flaniken was homeschooled until 8th grade but started attending public school because he wanted to play basketball in college and felt that homeschooled sports wouldn’t provide him as much exposure as public school programs.
Flaniken’s love and passion for the sport is what brought him to Bay College. Coach Matt Johnson recruited him his senior year at Detroit Edison. As their relationship got stronger, Coach Johnson persuaded Flaniken to come to Bay. He is studying business administration and plans on pursuing a career in management in the future. He comes from a religious family that believes in Christianity, which plays a huge role in who he is and where he is today.
His goal is to finish his degree at Bay and then earn his bachelor’s degree at a school closer to home. According to Flaniken, “I believe that Bay College has well prepared me for the future and pursuing my dreams. I can’t wait to see what’s next for me.”
