CLICK TO HEAR JACK HALL’S INTERVIEW WITH CAPTAIN JIM FINKBEINER
The Halloween holiday is upon us, and kids all across the Upper Peninsula will be dressed up and ready to fill their bags with candy and other treats.
But there are things to remember about keeping everybody safe.
Some of them may be common sense, but Marquette Police Captain Jim Finkbeiner says it never hurts to offer saefty tips.
“Especially for the younger kids, make sure that parents go with the kids when Trick-or-Treating,” Finkbeiner told RRN News. “That’s the safest way to be able to enjoy Trick-or-Treating. Also, go in groups of people. Don’t just go by yourself. It’s a lot more fun, first of all, and it’s safer.”
“Make sure you’re going to houses with porch lights on. Typically, those are the people that want Trick-or-Treaters and are expecting them. And, one of the biggest things, kids, wait until you get home before you dive into that candy too much.”
Finkbeiner says there hasn’t been concern locally of people tampering with the kids’ candy, but he says to shy away from “home made” treats that some people may offer. Stick to the wrapped, store-bought candy, he says, unless you know the people handing out homemade goodies.
And the police captain has some advice for adults, too, who may be partying on this holiday.
“A lot of people like to celebrate and have a good time in costumes and that,” Finkbeiner said. “If you’re going to have a few drinks, make sure that you designate a sober driver. There’s a lot of other ways to get home, too, like a taxi cab or have a friend come pick you up, even walk if you need to.”
