Marinette School District Superintendent Matt Smith says his first year in the district will be about more than learning a new job; it will be about building relationships while pushing for better results for students.
Smith says he has been impressed by the commitment of district staff and the community but says there is also work to be done when it comes to student achievement.
Smith says another major piece of his first year will be communication; particularly making sure families, staff, and taxpayers understand not only what the district is doing, but why decisions are being made.
Smith is also looking beyond the classroom.
He says schools should be an integral part of the community; working with businesses and local organizations while helping students understand that success after graduation does not have just one definition.
Smith says that includes expanding partnerships, dual-credit opportunities and youth apprenticeships; giving students the chance to earn school credit while gaining real-world experience.
Smith says ultimately, he wants the community to see the Marinette School District not simply as something located within the city, but as an integral part of its future.
