Upper Peninsula high school students are invited to take part in an essay-writing contest this week, in celebration of this year’s upcoming National Rural Health Day, recognized this year on November 19th.
The Literacy Legacy Fund of Michigan, the Michigan Center for Rural Health (Michigan’s State Office of Rural Health) and the Northern Michigan University Center for Rural Health, are partnering, once again, to sponsor and run this essay contest.
It’s open to all high school seniors who reside and attend school in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, are college/university bound in fall 2027, and intend to pursue a healthcare career in human medicine. Students meeting these criteria are eligible to enter the contest regardless of what college or university they enroll in next fall.
The deadline to enter is October 14, 2026, and winners will be notified and announced on November 19th, 2026.
Cash prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners elected in each of the Eastern, Central and Western regions of the Upper Peninsula.
First place winners will receive $500, 2nd place winners will receive $250 and 3rd place winners will receive $100.
The concept behind the National Rural Health Day Essay Contest is to shed light on a particular health related topic that impacts the health and well-being of Upper Peninsula residents. High school seniors who are on track to enroll in any college or university of their choice and intend to enter the future healthcare workforce are prompted to think and write about potential ideas and solutions from their perspective.
NMU English Education students then engage in the project by reading and scoring essays. This provides an opportunity for them to review essays, exercise their skillset, learn about the health-related topic and gain insight from students intending to enter the future healthcare workforce.
Please join us in sharing this opportunity with your networks in hopes of reaching ISD personnel, high school administrators and faculty and any family and friends who may fit the qualifying requirements.
To those working at regional colleges or universities: this applies to your 2027 prospective students and applicants that meet the requirements as well. All others, please feel free to share with your various partners, affiliates, and distribution groups.
