LMAS District Health Department is issuing a No Body Contact alert for South Manistique in waters near and surrounding the Norton Road Boat Launch Area. All other alerts for South Manistique Lake have been lifted.
Samples taken Monday, August 19, 2019, returned showing only one area of the lake still will elevated e-coli levels near the Norton Road access point. Seven locations around South Manistique Lake were sampled on Monday, August 19th.
The map below indicates the location of the Norton Road boat launch. The Wolfe Bay area and the Curtis area are no longer under the alert. With the prevailing winds over the weekend and on Monday the 19th, the location of the elevated e-coli levels was not surprising.
LMAS Environmental Health Staff found no further evidence of visible sewage at any of the points tested around the lake on Monday or Tuesday.
Additional sampling will be conducted on Wednesday, August 21st, with results available on Thursday the 22nd.
The Michigan DNR and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (formerly DEQ) continue to assist with the investigation at South Manistique Lake.
Diseases acquired from contact with contaminated water can cause gastrointestinal illness, skin, ear, respiratory, eye, and wound infections. Anyone exhibiting symptoms should contact their local health care provider.
