Four people managed to escape a house fire in Negaunee early Sunday. Firefighters were called to 919 Oak Street at about 3:30 in the morning. They found smoke coming from an upstairs apartment and managed to knock down the blaze in about 45 minutes. The upstairs apartment —one of three in the building—was a total loss. No word yet on the cause.

The page out from Marquette County Central Dispatch came in as unknown smoke in an apartment. That changed with the second page to a structure fire.
The fire was in a home, which was divided into 3 apartments. Two of the apartments were occupied. There were a total of 4 people in the home (apartments) at the time of the fire.
All residents of the apartments were outside the building when the Negaunee City Fire Department arrived on the scene. Residents’ names are not being released. The landlord’s name is also not being released. One of the apartment occupants is receiving financial assistance from the Pigs N Heat Fire Relief Fund.
The amount of money is unknown. They’re staying at the Ramada Inn in Marquette. It’s unknown if the apartment occupants have insurance.
The fire was knocked down in 45 minutes, but hot spots were found throughout the upper apartment. The fire did reach the attic and the structure’s outside eaves.
Front apartment had minor damage. Upstairs apartment had heavy smoke and fire damage along with water damage. Upstairs apartment totally destroyed.
