Registrations are open now for a workshop to help people with diabetes or pre=diabetes. They’re being run in a Zoom format through the Michigan State University Extension.
Could you have prediabetes? If you answer yes to a few of the following questions, you may qualify for the National Diabetes Prevention Program.
- Are you 45 years of age or older?
- Are you overweight?
- Do you have a mother, father, sister, or brother with diabetes?
- Is your family background African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, Asian American, or Pacific Islander?
- Have you ever been diagnosed with high blood pressure?
- Did you have diabetes while pregnant (gestational diabetes), or give birth to a baby weighing 9 pounds or more?
- Are you physically active less than three times a week?
The National Diabetes Prevention Program is designed to bring to communities’ an evidence-based lifestyle change program for preventing type 2 diabetes. It is based on research led by the National Institutes of Health and supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Coaches will provide support, encouragement, and information to participants and work through challenges that may arise providing an environment that encourages self-management for the participant’s health and wellbeing.
If you are an adult that has answered yes to any of the questions above, or you have been diagnosed with prediabetes, you may qualify to participate in the National Diabetes Prevention Program. If you have diabetes, are pregnant, or are under 18 years of age, this program would not be appropriate for you. Please consider registering for an upcoming program to learn more about what the National Diabetes Prevention Program is and how you can begin creating a healthier lifestyle through the many tools that are presented throughout this program. The program is offered online and currently there is no cost. Please feel free to reach out to Jim Harrington at harr1626@msu.edu for more information.
