Bell Chief Executive Officer Mitch Leckelt announced that June Hanson, MHL, BSN, has been appointed to serve as Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) for UP Health System – Bell, effective March 1. Hanson has been with Bell Hospital since May 2004. She has been the Interim Chief Nursing Officer since November 2020, and before that, she served as the Director of Emergency Services and the Director of Care Management. She spent her early healthcare career at Bell, as a Registered Nurse, Acute Care Unit & Intensive Care Unit, from May 2004 to January 2014.
After more than 16 years at UP Health System – Bell – Hanson brings to UP Health System an abundance of knowledge and skills. Well-versed in staff management and supervision, training and mentoring, and multidisciplinary team collaboration, Hanson also is seasoned in the world of health care management. She is highly experienced in medical clinical procedures, patient education, and counseling, treatment plan implementation, patient condition assessments, HIPAA requirements, and policy and procedure adherence. “We are thrilled that June Hanson has agreed to continue her career with us here at Bell, as our Chief Nursing Officer, to supervise patient care and delivery, implement programs to promote service excellence and patient safety, and engage in the strategy and development leadership of UP Health System,” Leckelt said. “Hanson brings her abundance of institutional knowledge and key experience in critical areas of focus for our organization.”
Born and raised in the UP, Hanson loves snowshoeing, camping, traveling, reading, hiking, and spending time with family. She attended Northern Michigan University where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2004, then began her career as an RN at UPHS-Bell, and has been there ever since. According to Hanson, “I grew up in Marquette, then I moved to Ishpeming because my first nursing job was at Bell. “I chose to begin my career there because of the variety of nursing experience I could get working the Acute Care and ICU at that time. The greatest challenge during my brief tenure as the Interim Chief Nursing Officer was helping to navigate the hospital through the COVID-19 pandemic, I believe there will be great difficulties coming our way as our community continues to combat COVID – 19 and, eventually, when we get to recover from it. Three things I’m grateful for that have set me up for success: Support of my family and friends, my family here at Bell (both present and past employees), and strong community support for this hospital.”

In my long career as a Registered Nurse and leader at UPHS-Bell, I have been both enthusiastic and eager to continue to participate in the success of this hospital making communities healthier. I’m guided by my commitment to the High Five Guiding Principles to ensure Upper Peninsula Health System – Bell will remain a trusted organization in our community where people choose to come for healthcare, physicians want to practice, and employees want to work.” In addition to her degree from NMU, Hanson also earned a Master of Health Leadership in March 2020, from Western Governors University.
