Michigan Cases Soar By More Than 8,000; Upper Peninsula Adds 52

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Wednesday reported 8,015 new coronavirus positive tests and 30 new deaths.

The eight thousand cases is by far the most reported in any single day in 2021. State officials say it’s youth sports and school outbreaks that are driving the increase in cases, and Michigan now has the highest infection rate in the country.

Here in the Upper Peninsula, there were 52 new cases reported on Wednesday. The most were in Marquette County with 21 new cases. There were eight new positive tests reported in both Delta and Houghton Counties.

No new deaths were reported in the U.P. on Wednesday.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said Tuesday that the numbers are very troubling, but she is not contemplating new restrictions. She said that the focus now is to get as many people vaccinated as possible, as quickly as possible, and that would allow for remaining restrictions to be lifted this summer.

The U.P. now has 17,540 confirmed positive test results, and 400 confirmed COVID-19 deaths, since the crisis began in March of 2020.

The U.P. has had a total of 4,712 probable cases and 96 probable deaths.

Some local health departments may report different numbers on different days. We use the MDHHS numbers in our report for consistency.

Michigan now has a total of 715,478 positive tests since the crisis began in March of 2020, and 16,327 deaths.

The state also has 80,014 “probable cases” and 1,046 “probable deaths” that are not confirmed by a positive test result, but COVID-19 is believed to be the cause.

The state also is reporting that 577,141 people have recovered from the virus. That is defined as being alive at least 30 days after the diagnosis or onset of symptoms. Recoveries are up by almost 8,000 people in the past week.
