The Manistique Public Safety Department says it was a team effort that prevented a fire from causing major damage at the U.P. Paper Mill over the weekend.
Public Safety says the call came in at just after 10 Saturday morning after a fire started in the main paper machine and had spread to the roof through the vents. They were able to get the fire under control in about 45 minutes, and crews stayed until 2:00 in the afternoon to clean up hot spots. Public Safety Director Ken Golat says everyone worked together on this: his firefighters, volunteer firefighters, the Hiawatha Township firefighters, and the paper mill’s fire response team. The Hiawatha Township aerial ladder truck came in handy, too, and there were no injuries or major damage in the incident, Golat says.
