The City of Escanaba Recreation Department is raising money to fix up the decades-old tennis courts in Ludington Park.
Recreation Director Kim Peterson says it’s way past time to upgrade these facilities.
“The surface on those four tennis courts is so bad,” she said. “It’s all original cement work, so you’re looking probably at 70-plus years and all the city does every few years is resurface it. They’re finally in such rough shape that we’re actually looking at doing a new surface instead of covering it up this year.”
Peterson says the plan is to turn two of the courts into pickleball courts, and keep the other two as tennis courts.
“In talking to the Iron Mountain-Kingsford area, they have a new surface that they installed,” Peterson said. “It’s a polyurethane surface. A rubberized matting for lack of a better term. It costs $30,000 more than just doing a concrete surface.”
She says the city put $170,000 toward the project, and they’re trying to raise about $50,000 to add to it. They’re about halfway there.
“With all of the local support we’ve had from businesses, non-profits, I’m confident that we’ll reach that goal,” she said.
They’re hoping to get the project completed this summer.
