The number of new coronavirus cases continues to fall across Michigan, and here in the Upper Peninsula.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Tuesday reported 739 new coronavirus positive tests and 35 new deaths.
State officials also went through death certificates and matched them to previous posiive test results. They added 31 more deaths to the total.
Michigan now has a total of 885,319 positive tests since the crisis began in March of 2020, and 19,019 deaths.
Here in the Upper Peninsula, there were 25 new cases reported Tuesday, with the most being six cases in Schoolcraft County. One new death was reported in the U.P. on Tuesday in Houghton County.
The U.P. now has 19,921 confirmed positive test results, and 429 confirmed COVID-19 deaths, since the crisis began in March of 2020.
The U.P. has had a total of 5,577 probable cases and 95 probable deaths.
Some local health departments may report different numbers on different days. We use the MDHHS numbers in our report for consistency.
The state also has 103,628 “probable cases” and 1,206 “probable deaths” that are not confirmed by a positive test result, but COVID-19 is believed to be the cause.
The state also is reporting that 791,206 people have recovered from the virus. That is defined as being alive at least 30 days after the diagnosis or onset of symptoms. That is an increase of 36,000 recoveries in the past week. This number is updated once a week, on Saturdays.
