The M&M Area Community Foundation (MMACF) is proud to have Katie Irving as their new partner on a scholarship for recovering addicts.
A recovering addict herself, Irving graduated from Marinette Country Treatment Drug Court in 2019. As she pursued a higher education, she encountered financial roadblocks caused by her legal past due to her addiction. She knew she wasn’t alone – her fellow graduates of Drug Court also faced similar challenges. So, Katie approached the Community Foundation about establishing a Fund to support recovering addicts in furthering their education.
When asked why this scholarship fund is important to her, Katie stated “Having a criminal, and especially a felony background makes a lot of things challenging when trying to get your life back on track. Obtaining an education should not be one of them.”
Katie organized the recent “Balloons for Addiction Awareness” event to demonstrate the significant impact of addiction in our communities. All proceeds went toward the newly established “Higher Education Scholarship for Recovering Addicts.”
“The overwhelming support for Katie’s balloon project demonstrates that we are all touched by addiction…no family is immune. The MMACF’s Board of Directors recognizes the important part this Fund will play in supporting community members, and thanks Katie for her desire to give back,” said Paula Gruszynski, MMACF Executive Director.
Donations are being accepted with a goal of awarding the first scholarship in the spring of 2022. Contributions may be mailed to the MMACF at 1110 10th Avenue, Suite L-1, Menominee, MI 49858, or made online at mmacf.org. Scholarship applications will be available on the M&M Area Community Foundation website in March of 2022.
