It was a busy Fifth of July holiday for the Escanaba Public Safety Department as firefighters had to deal with three spearate fires, all caused by lightning strikes on Monday.
The first fire happened at 3:42 in the afternoon at 514 South 12th Street. There were two apartments in that home, and officers had to rescue a man and his dog out of the building, after first being told everybody was out. Crews say the fire wasd tough to fight because it was in the attic and there are many voids in the building. They were on the scene 3-and-a-half hours.
While they were there, officers got a call that a tree was on fire at 524 South 15th Street. They were able to put that fire out quickly.
Then, the phone rang again, this time from Northtown. That one was at 1612 North 20th Street at just after 7:00 with heavy smoke coming from that home. That was an abandoned building so no one was there. Escanaba Township came to help out while city crews finished up on 12th Street. That fire was also in the attic but that one was put out quickly.
Firefighters say it was a tough day though, dealing with the heat and humidity.
