The Marquette Blues American Legion Baseball team won the Michigan Class A state championship on Saturday, beating the Copper Country Flames, 10-0, in five innings, at Marquette’s Haley Field.
Dakota Maki pitched a no-hitter, walking two batters, and Pete VandenAvond led off the game with a solo home run. The Copper Country made the final by beating Mount Pleasant Rosebush earlier in the day, 7-3, contuning a remarkable run that included four walk-off wins in the past eight days.
Marquette pitcher Erik Johnson was named the state tournament Most Valuable Player after winning Friday night’s game on a shutout, and batting .429 in the tournament.
