Governor Gretchen Whitmer this evening declared a state of emergency for Menominee County due to a large fire at a cedar mill in the Village of Carney.
“Right now, it is an all-hand-on-deck effort to contain the blaze to ensure that we protect life and property, and prevent this fire from spreading further,” said Governor Whitmer. “That’s why we are declaring a state of emergency for Menominee County to make every state resource is available to help in these efforts. I want to thank the brave first responders who rushed to the scene for their incredible sacrifices.”
On August 5, 2021 a fire began at Superior Cedar Products in the Village of Carney, Menominee County. The fire quickly escalated. More than 100 firefighters throughout the region responded to the out-of-control blaze. Although firefighters have established a perimeter and contained the blaze, this emergency will demand an ongoing response for many hours.
Menominee County requested a governor’s declaration on August 5. Governor Whitmer’s declaration concludes that additional assistance may be required to protect health, safety and property and to lessen or avert the threat of more severe and lasting harm.
By declaring a state of emergency, Governor Whitmer has made available all state resources in cooperation with local response and recovery efforts in the designated area. In addition to state resources, the declaration authorizes the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) to coordinate with other member states of the Interstate Emergency Management Assistance Compact, such as Wisconsin, if needed to use available resources to assist in the designated areas pursuant to the Michigan Emergency Management Plan.
