“Getting help for a mental health problem isn’t a sign of weakness: it’s a sign of strength and wisdom,” Cambensy said. “You can be the toughest person in the world, but still deal with a mental illness, like depression or anxiety. Seeing someone for your mental health is no different than seeing someone to treat any other health concern. This town hall is a great way for us to remove the stigma from mental illness and figure out what we can do to make sure that the people in our community get the help they need. I look forward to listening to my constituents’ stories and learning about how we can improve our community’s mental health care system.”
“If you want to craft quality legislation for the entire state, you need to get input from multiple communities,” said Brabec, a clinical psychologist who is moderating the tour. “The root causes of an issue in Lansing might differ drastically from what drives that same issue in Marquette. We’ve heard from countless community partners and consumers that they would like to be active participants in creating legislation, as opposed to simply reacting to an already crafted plan. For an issue like mental health, starting the legislative process in our communities is the only way to build legislation that is inclusive of all Michiganders. I look forward to hearing voices from across the state as we attempt to improve our mental health system.”
