The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Wednesday announced 8,671 new positive coronavirus test results and 52 new COVID-related deaths over the two-day period of Tuesday and Wednesday.
That’s roughly 43-hundred new cases per day.
State officials also went through old death certificates and matched them to previous positive tests. They added 58 more deaths to the statewide total.
Here in the Upper Peninsula, there were 335 new positive tests, for an average of 167 per day. The most were in Marquette County with 60 new cases, while Houghton County added 51 cases.
Delta County added 40 cases and Dickinson County reported 27.
There were four new deaths in the U.P.: two in Dickinson County and one each in Delta and Chippewa Counties.
Since the pandemic began in March, 2020, there have been 26,153 confirmed positive test results in the Upper Peninsula, and 492 confirmed COVID deaths.
There’s also been 7,673 “probable” COVID cases in the Upper Peninsula and 97 “probable” COVID deaths in the U.P. This is where they think COVID contributed to or caused the death, but there is no positive test result to prove it.
The Upper Peninsula’s total population, according to the 2020 census, was roughly 302,000 people.
