The Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus, or EEE disease, has been detected in Marquette County.
The county health department says the virus was found in a ruffed grouse, and there have been several birds that have tested positive for it in recent years in the Upper Peninsula. The health department says that means that mosquitoes are likely bringing the virus here. The virus mostly effects horses, and is 90-percent fatal to them. But it can also cause severe illness in humans. The best way you can predict yourself, they say, is to avoid mosquito bites, as that’s the way the virus is transmitted.
