United Way of Marquette County announces the winners of basic needs shopping sprees at Meijer.
United Way of Marquette County held a Facebook contest allowing community member to choose a participating partner agency to win shopping sprees at Meijer for basic needs items. Three randomly selected people chose agencies to get the shopping sprees – one for $500 and two for $125.
Winning entrants and their agency selections were made Monday. Mary Moe chose the Women’s Center for the $500 shopping spree. The recipients of the two $125 sprees are Negaunee Senior Citizen’s Center, chosen by Amy Mattson, and Bay Cliff Health Camp, chosen by Chandler Jones. Agencies will shop for their basic needs items Wednesday morning at Meijer.
Funds for the basic needs shopping sprees are the result of Michigan taxpayers selecting the United Way Fund on their Voluntary Contributions Schedule, Form 4642, when filing their Michigan Income Taxes in 2021. In accordance with Public Act 527 of 2008, the funds must be used “for basic needs, including, but not limited to, food, clothing, and shelter.”
UWMC is excited to give these funds to nonprofits in need and continue to support the local community in Marquette County. “We hope people see this money staying local to help our neighbors in need and even more people select the United Way Fund when filing their taxes next year, so we can make this an annual event with more money and more nonprofits involved,” says Holly Michelin, Program Coordinator at UWMC.
