With the bay between Baraga and L’Anse now frozen over, it’s time to guess when the ice will melt. This marks the third year the Baraga County Chamber of Commerce is holding an Ice Melt Contest on the Keweenaw Bay. The drum was placed on the ice on January 27. You can check it out from the comfort of your automobile as you are driving on US-41 near the Baraga State Park.
Participants try their luck by guessing the exact time the drum will break through the ice on the bay. The participant who has the closest guess, down to the second, will win 50% of net ticket proceeds. Check for results, terms, and conditions at baragaicemelt.com.
Judy Bozicevich, who heads up promotions for the Ice Melt, is looking forward to a promising amount of participation in this year’s contest, which means a large prize to the winner. Boziecevich says, “Early entries indicate a good start to the number of participants. Last year the barrel went out the first part of February, this year it’s going out the last week of January. The ice is here. Now it’s up to you to figure out when it will melt.”
Ticket sales will end on March 14, 2022. Tickets can be purchased at and returned to Indian Country Sports, Hardwood Steakhouse, Skipper’s Bar & Grill, Northern Oil or the Chamber office. Online entry options are available at baragaicemelt.com.
