Caregiver Incentive Project (CIP), the nonprofit organization focused on improving the lives of the cared for by supporting caregivers, continued its scholarship program with a ceremony on Friday. Makayla Selzer of Negaunee, Mich. was awarded $2,000 to help further her education and encourage her continued caregiver role.
Selzer is in her first semester at Bay College in Iron Mountain, working towards a degree in nursing. She lives in Negaunee with her fiancé and one-year-old daughter. She currently works with AdvisaCare in Marquette as the lead caregiver and has been working as a caregiver for four years now, which she said has been a wonderful, rewarding experience.
“I love getting to spend every day doing something that I love and helping others,” says Selzer. “It means a lot to me to receive this scholarship to help continue my caregiving career. It is important to the lives of so many people who depend on the help of a caregiver to be able to live independently.”
The scholarship program allows CIP to further its mission of incentivizing students to become or continue working as paid in-home caregivers within the existing systems as they attend school.
“I love the work that the Caregiver Incentive Project is doing to shine a light on the need for more caregivers in the community,” says Selzer. “As a caregiver, I know how much my job means to the people I care for and I want to encourage others to become caregivers as well. It is so nice to be able to form relationships with the people I care for and make their daily lives better.”
These scholarships are made possible by a grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation of Michigan, a generous donation from David and Claudia Werner of Dexter, Mich., along with other donations. CIP will open its scholarship application window again on March 1 with the goal of awarding even more potential and current in-home caregivers scholarships of up to $2,000. The scholarships are restricted to students enrolled in a U.P. college or university and it is not dependent on field of study.
