The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Friday reported 1,661 new coronavirus cases and six new deaths, which covers both Thursday and Friday.
State officials also went through old death certificates and matched them to previous positive test results, and added 27 more deaths to the state total.
Here in the Upper Peninsula, there was one new death reported, in Marquette County. There were 22 new cases in the U.P., with seven of them in Mackinac County. Two counties, Houghton and Luce, had cases deducted from their totals.
From now on, when MDHHS reports on COVID deaths, they will not identify how many are new deaths and how many were found by checking older death certificates. Also, MDHHS will issue only one coronavirus report per week, on Wednesdays. The reports have been issued three times a week since last fall.
