Upper Peninsula men and women who want to get a career in truck driving will soon have another option, even after the State of Michigan shut down Northern Michigan University’s truck driving school over multiple violations.
The owner of the CDL and Operator Training company based in the northern Menominee County town of Spalding says it has worked out a deal to take over training programs in Marquette to go along with its current programs.
Shauna Bianco at Professional Driver Services told RRN News in an exclusive interview that her company had already been offering help to those effected by the NMU closure, but now, in a new agreement with the university, this will go another step further.
“We actually worked with the State of Michigan, and we were able to open up a second classroom location, using the old location they (NMU) were using for their training,” Bianco said. “So, we were able to take our training program and extend it to the NMU campus.”
Bianco says that this program will not be under the auspices of Northern Michigan University.
“We will be renting it,” she said. “So, essentially, we will be just renting the space from the college. We have to abide by their rules and we have to be accomodating if they need their parking lot, but we do work around their schedule. And that’s one of the beautiful things about our program. It’s very flexible, and it was built that way.”
Bianco says that her company needs more people to apply for student spots in both the Spalding and Marquette locations. And she says she’s looking for more instructors.
“We are definitely looking for more instructors,” Bianco said. “Particularly in the Marquette area, but we are looking for two additional ones in our Spalding location as well. Part-time, for now, for whoever wants to make up their schedule. Two prart-time instructors in both Marquette and Spalding.”
She says she’d like people interested in training, even if they ultimately seek employment at her competitor, the Gwinn-based Midwest Truck Driving School.
Bianco stresses that this is not a formal “partnership” between her company and the university.
