The Hiawatha National Forest has partnered with the Round Island Lighthouse Preservation Society in an agreement that supports preservative maintenance work on the Round Island Lighthouse.
This agreement brings a new partner organization to the forest, while aligning priorities, sharing resources, accelerating work and delivering results on the ground.
Funded with the Great American Outdoors Act, the partnership focuses on deferred maintenance on the historic lighthouse, including roofing, exterior painting, masonry repair and other critical work to protect the structure from decay due to variable weather conditions on the Great Lakes.
Positioned in the Straits of Mackinac, Round Island is a remote location with both a federal ilderness designation and the historic structure. The preservation work will take place over the course of three years to allow sufficient time for crews to plan. With factors such as water transport, remote conditions and limited access to resources, teamwork, preparation and a sense of adventure are a must for success.
