The Mid Peninsula Schools in Delta County are switching to virtual learning for the rest of the month.
Superintendent Eric VanDamme says it’s because of the rising number of coronavirus cases in his small district. He says there’s been an increase of people quarantined, both staff and students, in the past week alone.
His letter to Mid Peninsula families is posted below:
Mid Peninsula Families:
As of November 1, 2020 Mid Peninsula had no staff members or students that had tested positive for COVID-19.
As I type this letter on November 9, 2020 we have several students and eight staff members either quarantined or positive for COVID-19. Pair that with most hospitals in the Upper Peninsula at or above capacity for COVID patients and we are left to make a decision that is in the best interest of our students and staff.
After consultation with our local health department and hospital systems, effective immediately we are closing Mid Peninsula School to in-person instruction and shifting all students to virtual learning. Your child should have any and all information they will need to succeed online. If you are in need of wi-fi or a device please contact the school immediately.
If you have questions please feel free to reach out. The switch to online learning will last through Thanksgiving break, and our in person return to learning will take place Monday, November 30, 2020. If you need assistance with childcare please contact us as well. We understand the impact this will have on our students and parents and did not make this decision without a considerable amount of thought. We are willing to help whenever able. As always I appreciate your patience and understanding as we all try to ensure the safety and well-being of our students and staff.
We will be delivering lunch/breakfast to your mailbox at your bus pick-up/drop off on Wednesday this week, and please follow Mid Peninsula School District on Facebook for updates to the food delivery schedule.
Once again feel free to reach out with any concerns regarding our shift to virtual learning through Thanksgiving break.
Respectfully,
Eric J. VanDamme
