Each year in April as the fresh air of Spring meets the thawing grounds of Lake Superior’s shore, Festival of the Angry Bear comes out of hibernation and takes over Spring Street in downtown Marquette for an all day, outdoor celebration.
Modeled after some of the great beer festivals of Europe with an Upper Peninsula twist, the festival is a showcase of craft beer & community- with a focus on barrel-aged beers, live music, delicious food, and the great outdoors. The 7th annual Festival of the Angry Bear kicks off at 3pm on Saturday, April 9th at the Ore Dock Brewing Company.
“After an unimaginable three-year hibernation, we are so excited to wake the Angry Bear once again and restore the roar in Marquette,” says festival director Kris Wierenga, “as our community comes out of its collective winter hibernation – not to mention the past two years of pandemic induced cabin fever – there’s no better time for a street fest to bask in the sun and celebrate what makes our town so special.”
The Barrel-Aged Spring Awakening will feature 4 bars with over 30 taps of Superior Sourced craft beer, hard seltzer, and sodas to supplement the arsenal of barrel-aged beer and limited releases that highlight the festival.
Entertainment for this year’s festival will consist of four stages of live music and performances from premier acts from the midwest – Them Coulee Boys (WI), Lalo Cura (IN), & The Brothers Quinn (WI), as well as Upper Peninsula favorites – Outlaw’d, Who Dat Brass, Ramble Tamble, and Blanco Suave.
Participants are encouraged to get “wild” and dress up for the Woodland Creature Costume Contest with prizes sponsored by neighboring businesses.
Additionally, there will be locally curated artwork from the Culture of Cult art series, as well as a live chainsaw, bear-carving demonstration, and a feast of food trucks including Smelted Pizza, Digs, Island Coney, and the season debuts of Dia De Los Tacos and the Burger Bus.
