The U.P. Regional Blood Center is partnering with the City of Negaunee and the City of Ishpeming for the inaugural Fight to Fill the Blood Bank.
The cities will compete by asking people to donate blood to the U.P. Regional Blood Center. The pints of blood will then be counted and the city with the most pints donated wins. The winning city will receive the honorary blood drive trophy.
“John F. Kennedy said ‘Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try’. Our cities started this Blood Fight to try something new, to try and raise awareness, and try to get residents involved in a spirited competition for the betterment of our communities. Together – Ishpeming, Negaunee and our Regional Blood Center are generating the gift of life through community engagement. What a great a TEAM ACCOMPLISHMENT!” said Craig Cugini, City of Ishpeming Manager. “Spirited competition sparks interest, and we need to increase interest and support for our regional blood center. Ishpeming and Negaunee have agreed to battle for the blood donation trophy. No one loses a fight that generates the gift of life as the result. The 2021 Blood Fight generated 77 Pints of Blood. This year, both cities want to be greater in 2022 and exceed the 100-pint mark. Each pint of blood represents saving three lives.
“The small but mighty Ishpeming Hematites are ready to take on the Miners in the 2022 Battle of the Blue Blood Drive!!” says, Ishpeming High School.
To participate, individuals can donate blood to support the City of Negaunee on November 9 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Negaunee High School located at 500 W Arch Street in Negaunee. Donations can be made on November 22 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Ishpeming High School located at 319 E Division Street in Ishpeming.
“Negaunee is looking forward to this year’s battle for blood, this is a great cause that will help many individuals in the Upper Peninsula!” said Nate Heffron, Negaunee City Manager.
The Fight to Fill the Blood Bank was created to raise awareness of the Upper Peninsula’s blood supply and increase blood donations. The U.P. Regional Blood Center is currently experiencing a critical need for all blood types.
