Hiawatha National Forest Supervisor, Shannon Rische, announced today that Lake Michigan Campground on the Forest’s East Zone will re-open on August 12, 2023, for the remainder of the season. The public can make reservations via Recreation.gov using the link above or call 1-877-444-6777.
The campground was among six (Brevoort Lake, Lake Michigan, Carp River, Monocle Lake, Soldier Lake, and Bay View Campgrounds) that had been affected by an unexpected closure. Individuals who held cancelled reservations at any of the closed campgrounds were given advance notice that reservations would be opening. While we regret that the cancellations impacted forest visitors and our local communities, we are pleased to open this campground for the remainder of the season.
“Safety is a priority for us. Our staff have been working diligently to address to address safety concerns as well as the many tasks required to operate the campground,” said Rische.
Without a concessionaire, the Forest could not prepare or operate all six affected campgrounds this season, so the decision was made to focus first on Lake Michigan Campground.
“Depending on circumstances, a second campground may open later this season, and we anticipate re-opening the remaining campgrounds next season,” said Rische.
Coincidentally, the Forest Service was already scheduled to offer a new campground concessionaire prospectus for a 5-to-10-year special use permit to manage the Forest’s east zone campgrounds in the future. That prospectus was released on July 14, 2023, and a news release was issued.
