After extensive planning, MyMichigan Medical Center Sault is preparing for major renovations to its downtown main campus.
MyMichigan Health is investing nearly $19 million in a revitalization project to modernize facilities, improve patient experiences and ensure the hospital continues to serve the Eastern Upper Peninsula for generations to come.
“Our Medical Center has cared for the residents of the Eastern Upper Peninsula for more than 100 years, and this renovation and revitalization will ensure that we are here for future generations,” said Kevin Kalchik, president, MyMichigan Medical Center Sault. “These projects also reflect MyMichigan Health’s continued commitment to the Eastern Upper Peninsula and to bringing high-quality care close to home for all of the communities that we serve.” The project will focus on three major areas, including the relocation of the Behavioral Health Unit, expansion of outpatient surgery and remodel of the Long Term Care Unit. Construction will begin in June and is expected to take place over several months.
Behavioral Health Unit Relocation
The project includes relocating the Behavioral Health Unit from Kincheloe, approximately 22 miles south, to the Medical Center campus in Sault Ste. Marie. Moving the unit to a centralized location allows patients to access resources and support more seamlessly.
“By situating the Behavioral Health Unit right here at the Medical Center, patients will be surrounded by the resources and support they need, from on-site dining and streamlined transportation to expedited consults with specialists, while our providers can serve a broader range of clinical needs” said Corinna Haller, manager, behavioral health services, MyMichigan Medical Center Sault.
Outpatient Surgery Expansion
The renovation project will also expand the outpatient surgery area with an addition to the main building, adding 18 new patient rooms. This expansion is designed to streamline workflows for staff while providing patients with greater privacy and comfort.
“This expansion allows patients and their families to connect more directly with surgeons and care teams, improving convenience, privacy, and safety while supporting future growth,” said Rachel Richwine, manager surgical services, MyMichigan Medical Center Sault.
Long Term Care Unit Remodel
In addition, the Long Term Care Unit project will include a new HVAC system, updated dining room, modernized showers and bathrooms, a refreshed kitchen, a redesigned nurses’ station, enhanced accessibility, updated interior surfaces and improved façade. Residents will remain safely in their familiar surroundings throughout the renovation.
“By keeping residents in their familiar surroundings during renovations, we can modernize our Long Term Care Unit with updated amenities, enhanced safety features, and improved functionality. This will create a more comfortable and supportive environment for everyone,” said James LaBell, LNHA, Long Term Care, MyMichigan Medical Center Sault.
MyMichigan Medical Center Sault remains committed to providing high-quality, patient-centered care while modernizing its facilities for the future. The revitalization project ensures that residents, patients, and staff will continue to enjoy a safe, comfortable, and innovative health care environment for generations to come.
